The success of a community depends on many things like food, water, shelter, and jobs. But there are also other things that influence a community's harmony and well-being:

• Can community members organize to solve major issues?

• Are all people respected and valued for their contributions?

• Does everyone have a say in community decisions?

• Does everyone feel included?

This month let's take a closer look at how AKF works to strengthen civil society institutions and build self-reliant communities.

Each year, AKF works with over 30,000 civil society organizations across 14 countries, helping more than 7 million people.

Pluralism is an important part of civil societies. It's the belief that people's differences can be an asset. It's also about accepting and respecting each person's unique abilities.

The non-profit Merti Integrated Development Program was able to stay afloat thanks to Yetu training

Yetu (“Ours” in Kiswahili) is a partnership program of AKF and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Kenya.

One of the goals of Yetu was to train local non-profits to increase their fundraising abilities in order to continue support of community efforts.  

Some Yetu program highlights include:

• Organized 200 civil society organizations for strong resource mobilization
• Raised over $2.2 million through local fundraising vs international funds
• Self-determined priorities of projects to tackle community issues
• Including younger participants in the trainings to continue this approach into the next generations

Ahhhhh! AKF and the AKDN believe that creating a brighter future means also taking care of the natural world around us.

The parks and gardens created and rehabilitated by the AKDN provide a "green lung" for cities and offer residents a place to exercise, learn and relax.
