Our Work

The Aga Khan Foundation takes a holistic approach to development, working across seven interconnected focus areas to address the root causes of poverty.

Where We Work

The majority of AKF’s activities are in rural communities in mountainous, coastal, and other remote, resource-poor areas.

AKF operates in Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Kenya, the Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Portugal, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

We also have offices in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, focusing primarily on resource mobilization and public outreach. Our headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland.

Our Distinct Approach

A Generational View

We stand with communities through conflict, instability, and change. We don’t leave when times get hard. This continuity builds trust and allows us to address the root causes of poverty, not just the symptoms.

Powered by Communities

Every year, we partner with more than 25,000 civil society organizations to blend regional wisdom with global expertise. The result: Solutions that are locally led, culturally grounded, and designed to endure.

Transforming Systems

Poverty is never one-dimensional, so our approach isn’t either. We tackle interconnected challenges with holistic solutions and build infrastructure to support real change.
